On an evening where only a win would do for our high flying reserves, they came up with the goodies!
In an entertaining evening of football against league leaders Romsey Town, the score was just 1 v 0 to Fawley at half time courtesy of a Ben Murphy finish after beating both defender and goalkeeper to the ball to poke the ball in.
Second half and Romsey came out the stronger and more purposeful side (clearly got a rollicking at half time!) and soon got their equaliser. Romsey sustained this pressure mid way into the second half and eventually got the second goal to swing the game in their favour, and by this stage Fawley were dropping deeper and the signs were ominous!
Cue a bizarre equalizer from goal machine Alfie Cole, who acted quickest from the goalkeepers save to head home only for the linesman to flag for offside leading to some confusion as to whether the goal stood. Credit to the referee at this stage, who consulted the linesman and ignored his decision to disallow the goal which meant it was game back on at 2 v 2! Alfie grabbed the ball from the squabbling Romsey players who weren't happy with the decision and placed it on the centre circle, no messing around with our old school centre half...he wanted the third goal!
Sure enough the third goal followed late in the second half with around 80 on the clock, a ball chipped over the centre halves meant it was a foot race with Sean Auger fancying his chances, his first shot was saved by the on rushing goalkeeper, only for the ball to ricochet back off Sean and bounce over the goalie and into the net, cue the celebrations!
Fawley had to endure a last five minutes of defending deep in their own half and dealt with a number of set pieces being slung in the box, but credit to young Sam Robinson - who's made the reserve goalkeeper spot his own with a string of impressive performances - as he managed to kill the game by clinging on to the ball, and diving on it in slow motion to ensure the clock ran down sufficiently... wise beyond his years is our young Robbo!
Just had a quick search on youtube for some goalkeeper time wasting videos, have a look at this cracker who untied his own shoelaces before taking a goal kick...(don't get any ideas Sam)
Great result tonight against the league leaders which propels the reserves into second place with three games to go, and with Romsey Town now looking over their shoulders with work still to do to claim the title. Something tells me this is going right to the final game, much like the first team, allbeit for different reasons!
