Since the last match report we've had a lengthy amount of time off with cancellations against Verwood Town and Downton at home. The Verwood Town home fixture was due to be a "pay what you want" match with our local partners Fawley Falcons under 14's primed for a training sessions with our joint first-team manager Scott Johnston. Although the training session went ahead, the first team fixture was called off very late to much frustration from both sides!
We have had two fixtures since Follands Sports at the end of October, starting with a narrow defeat away to US Portsmouth in the league on 18th November. We had more success on Tuesday night away to Premier league opposition Shaftesbury Town with a 0-0 draw going to penalties, and the Oilers Craig Shellard, Josh McPhee, Mark Lilley and Lee Burch keeping their nerve from 12 yards to put us through to the next round of the Sydenhams Wessex League Cup. We have been rewarded with a home cup tie (yes, that's right, HOME CUP TIE!) against AFC Stoneham which will be held on Tuesday 5th December. Well done to all the boys on Tuesday night and also a thanks to those who drove to the game, heard it was a late one!
Our visitors Alton Town have had a reasonable start to the season and currently occupied a top half position in the table. The match had a fast-paced feel to it with both midfields enjoying spells of possession. Ben Bolton had a chance from a deep Matt Hawkins delivery but he could only glance it off the top of his head and over the Alton crossbar. Alton's first goal came mid way through the first half with the game still fairly evenly matched. A Fawley goal kick from Page was met by an Alton player head, who had Danny Knee making a perfectly timed run and side-footed his strike into Page's far corner for one-nil. Alton started to control more of the game and they quickly had a second when a goal mouth scramble - and what looked like a push on Matt Hawkins - resulted in the ball falling to Danny Knee who had time to pick his spot from within a crowded penalty area for two-nil.
The second half had a different feel to it, with Alton dropping deeper from the very start of the half and choosing to hit on the counter-attack when they had the chance. Fawley enjoyed much more possession but couldn't break down a resolute Alton back line who were organised and disciplined all game. Mid-way through the second half Ben Bolton broke behind the Alton defence and drilled a cross (or shot, I'll have to ask him to confirm..) across goal but neither Roche or Lilley were able to connect as it fizzed across the six yard box. The best chance fell to Kieran Roche who was released by one of Steve Green's rangey passes, but he could only lift the ball over the Alton stopper and wide of the left post.
And so it wasn't to be Fawleys day today on the pitch, but a big thank you to our committee members and volunteers for helping to run the Bistro, collect the match day dosh and tidying up the changing rooms late after the game! Next up we have East Cowes Vics away from home as the Oilers will be hoping to pick up three points with a ferry trip across the Solent to the Isle of Wight.
Off the field we had more success as we all quickly piled into our local pub and Club Sponsors the Old Mill for a fantastic curry before the Fawley AFC race night!
RACE NIGHT @ THE OLD MILL
Massive thanks to Simon the Bar Manager at the Old Mill Inn for enabling us to put the night on in the Barn and providing the food from the kitchen, superstar Bartender Abbie, Riley the Fawley Cricketer and part-time expert glass collector and anybody else who helped to set up the Fawley AFC race night, we're ever so grateful! A successful night with much needed club funds were raised, so thank you to everyone who came along to support the evening including the players!
